Figuring It Out: Does Your Child Have A Toothache?
Sometimes, you might not really know what to make of what’s going on with your little one! You wonder: Does your child have a toothache but isn’t telling you? Does your child think that his or her tooth hurts but really, it’s a nearby structure or set of tissues that’s causing the discomfort? Of course, our Dallas, TX pediatric dental care team is ready to help you do a bit of detective work, so you can sort out what might be going on and how to move forward. With that said, when you cannot find the source of pain or you’re just not certain, set up a dental checkup with us!
Is Your Child Irritable, Drooling, Etc.?
When you notice that your usually chatty child has gone quite quiet, that your little one is drooling a bit, or that something else is off, remember that tooth pain can be the culprit. Find out how your child is doing and then remember to follow through by asking for any explanations you can get (and for your child to show you what hurts). If one of those cute little fingers points to a tooth, then it’s probably a good idea to give us a call to let us know that a toothache is brewing. The sooner you see us and the sooner we treat the issue (such as by placing a filling for a cavity), the sooner your child feels much better.
Did You Just See Us?
Maybe you get a look at your child’s tooth and it looks completely healthy! In addition, you just saw us for a checkup! However, your child is holding his or her face, as though there’s a toothache. This may point to some other issue that is causing pain in the same area, such as pain from an ear infection, pressure from sinus congestion, etc. When in doubt, give your pediatrician a call to set up a visit.
Is It A Loose Tooth?
Remember that if your child is complaining of a toothache and it’s about time for your child to lose teeth, this may be the reason. Teeth that are loosening and getting ready to fall out can feel uncomfortable and the area surrounding may feel extra sensitive. In many cases, explaining what is happening to your child may be sufficient for your child to no longer feel afraid or worried and for the discomfort to stop causing distress. However, when you’re unsure or your child seems to be very uncomfortable, you may always give us a call! (Hint: You may also use a cool compress or an over-the-counter analgesic for relief).
