We always recommend kids undergo a routine dental exam every six months, that way we can catch cavities in the earliest stages of demineralization, before they experience toothaches and tooth sensitivity. Otherwise, you may not know your child needs help until they complain about an aching tooth. Once the tooth hurts, the decay has reached a more severe stage, and care is crucial to avoid infection and the risk of losing the tooth. If the decay is more advanced, but still in the early stages, we could halt the cavity with Silver Diamine Fluoride, which is applied to the tooth in a varnish form. Dental Fillings

If we find the issue is full-fledged, then we could help in one sitting with a dental filling. The material we use is metal-free and safe for all ages. The biocompatible composite resin actually bonds with the tooth and lasts for years to come. At the same time, this material is more lifelike in appearance and can often blend with the tooth. Placement involves our team numbing the tooth, removing decay, and applying the material in several layers. We then sculpt and mold the tooth as we cure the composite resin under a light. The last step is to polish the tooth for a brighter appearance.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Could we offer care to help children avoid tooth decay altogether? Yes! We can discuss better brushing and flossing habits at home, and other tips for lowering the risk of tooth decay. Our team can also conduct a cleaning every six months to completely remove the layers of plaque and tartar that can weaken enamel.

We also have fluoride treatments, which we can apply every checkup visit. We simply add a special varnish to the teeth that helps strengthen the enamel to prevent it from weakening and eroding, so cavities are less likely. Since kids have trouble reaching the rear teeth, we can coat the molars in a dental sealant, a thin acrylic layer that prevents food and drink particles from being stuck where they have difficulty brushing and flossing. Once in place these can last for years to come, often as long as ten! Both options can be applied in seconds, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as the material completely cures.
