Sports Drinks: A Few Things To Consider
Your kids love sports drinks! They are delicious, come in beautifully vibrant colors and amazing flavors, and they’re the cool thing to drink when participating in sports! They may also be a favorite off of the field, too, which is not always the best thing for your child’s oral health. Of course, occasionally enjoying a chilly, bright purple beverage isn’t going to be the downfall of anyone’s oral health, however, our Dallas, TX team does have some considerations for you to keep in mind (so you can keep your kids’ smiles safe).
#1: They Are Extremely Acidic!
Oops! Did you know that sports drinks are very acidic? It’s one of those things that is easy to overlook because they seem so cooling and refreshing. It seems like everyone drinks them (because they are, in fact, very popular). However, do remember that due to their acidity, they are damaging to your child’s oral health when they’re consumed frequently.
#2: They Are Staining
You might think to yourself that staining is no biggie. Your children are young with resilient teeth that are quite white and pretty! Or, you may decide that you’ll just choose sports drinks that are low in pigment strength, so kids don’t end up with stains. Let’s review what’s not quite right about these ideas, so you can protect your children’s oral health with ease. First, we encourage you to remember that, particularly if your kiddos drink these and other staining beverages as habit, they can end up with discoloration more quickly than you think possible! In addition, remember that even though clear, white, and light-hued beverages are not full of obvious pigments that will stain teeth, sports drinks still contribute by slowly eroding enamel due to high acidity (which paves the way for easier staining of tissue by other foods and beverages).
#3: Water Is Usually Just As Hydrating
We know that it’s not as exciting, enticing to look at, or delicious! However, we do want to help parents to remember that water is usually just as hydrating as sports drinks. Of course, in situations in which your children have played very hard at a sport without stop for an extended period of time, replenishing electrolytes with a sports drink can be beneficial. Usually, though, water works and is 100 percent safe if not good for one’s oral health! Ask for details the next time we see you!
