Why Do Kids Seem More Likely to Get Cavities?

A lot of people assume that children are more likely to get cavities in their teeth than adults are. In some ways, that’s true, but not for any reason involving children’s teeth, specifically. No matter how old the tooth is, a cavity develops the same way – when oral bacteria infect a tooth’s structure. Either the enamel has grown weak from attacks by acid, which oral bacteria produce, or the enamel is compromised from excessive tooth wear or damage. The thing is, protecting teeth from cavities takes some effort on your child’s part. That includes consistently good hygiene, regular preventive care, and if it’s necessary, additional preventive measures to better protect your child’s teeth. (more…)

What Are You Teaching Your Child About Dental Hygiene?

There’s a lot that you want your child to know about caring for their teeth, especially how to avoid any mistakes you may have made throughout the years (such as neglecting good hygiene). However, it isn’t just what you tell your child that matters. For instance, no matter how much you tell them to brush and floss your teeth, they’re much less likely to if they never see you do it. In many other ways, you can be teaching your child more about dental hygiene by what you do than you what you say, for better or worse. (more…)

Can You Save Your Child from Toothaches?

If possible, you would save your child from ever feeling any kind of discomfort. When it comes to toothaches, you can at least do more to help your child avoid the pain than you can for most other things. While you can’t guarantee that your child will never experience a toothache or any other dental health issue, you can help them understand the importance of keeping up with good hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly. This will help them successfully prevent many of the most common things that can cause a toothache, and in many cases, the need for extensive treatment to alleviate one. (more…)

Why Fill a Cavity in Your Child’s Baby Tooth?

When you have a cavity, your instinct may be to see your dentist to have it filled. The short is answer is usually yes; any instance of tooth decay should be addressed as soon as possible and not allowed to progress further. The more extensive answer is that tooth decay is more than just the cavity you see, and leaving one in your child’s primary tooth could spell significant trouble for their adult smiles later in life. Are Fluoride and Dental Sealants Good for Kids’ Teeth?

Most of the treatments that we design for children’s teeth are designed with a heavy focus on prevention. For example, routine checkups and cleanings are general services that are designed to help prevent a wide range of issues, from tooth decay to tooth damage, and more. In addition to routine cleanings, however, your child may sometimes need a little help in effectively preventing an issue like tooth decay from forming. At our Dallas, TX, dental office, we can often provide that help in the form of fluoride treatments and/or dental sealants, which are designed specifically to protect your child’s teeth from harmful oral bacteria.
