Hurt Your Tooth? Our Team Is Here For You!

An injury to your kid’s smile can happen at any time, and when it does, you’ll need to bring them in for a dental visit as soon as possible. Whether your little one has hurt a tooth while playing a sport, has something stuck between their teeth, or the area around a tooth has started swelling, our team is here to help. In today’s blog, your team at PDC Kids in Dallas, TX, is here today to talk about our caring approach to pediatric dental emergencies.
Emergency Treatments Vs General Dentistry
How do you know when your kid’s smile needs immediate attention? This is a question that you might have if you have noticed a change in their oral health. In general, we recommend that you come in for an urgent dental visit if they are experiencing long-lasting discomfort, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or swelling to the area. Treating such a problem promptly can alleviate the discomfort and address the issue. If your little one is experiencing a mild ache that goes away after taking an over-the-counter pain reducer, it may not necessarily require immediate attention. You should mention it in their next dental checkup, though. If you have any questions or are unsure of the severity of an injury, you can always give our team a call.
Know How To Respond
Emergencies can occur at any time, so it’s important to have a plan in place to ensure you know how to respond. First, you will need to assess the type of injury that has occurred. Does the area exhibit bleeding or swelling, or has one of their pearly whites sustained damage? You may be able to reduce bleeding by placing gauze or cloth on the area. If your child has a long-lasting toothache, you may be able to use over-the-counter pain reducers to relieve discomfort for the moment, as well as a cold compress to the area. Once the injury is under control, please contact our team to arrange your same-day visit. Our team may be able to give you further instructions to help improve comfort while you wait for your visit.
Preventing Common Injuries
Some of the most common injuries we see in our office include broken or knocked-out teeth, debris lodged between the teeth, and toothaches. While not all emergencies can be avoided completely, there are a few steps you can take to prevent them. If your little one plays contact sports such as soccer or football, consider getting them a mouthguard for additional protection. Remember to plan restorative treatments, like dental fillings, as soon as possible if your child has a cavity to avoid discomfort from a serious cavity.
