Could Dental Sealants Prevent Tooth Decay?
When a child is particularly at risk for the development of cavities, whether due to poor oral health or special needs, we want to take steps to protect their smiles. Which is why our office offers dental sealants for kids of all ages. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about cavity prevention.
The Causes of Cavities in a Child’s Smile
Each of our teeth are coated in a protective layer of enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. This prevents bacteria from coming into contact with the sensitive inner layers of dentin, which causes a cavity. However, poor oral hygiene habits could encourage plaque buildup and weaken outer enamel, causing decay. In addition, teeth grinding or injury could also comprise the enamel. When a cavity forms, it will grow in severity with time, eventually causing tooth sensitivity and toothaches. Once the tooth begins to hurt, treatment is crucial to avoid an infection or premature loss of a tooth!
Dental Sealants
For kids, tooth decay tends to form in the rear of the mouth, where kids have the hardest time reaching when they brush and floss. Which is why we could prescribe dental sealants! This acrylic coating is used to coat the rear teeth and prevent food particles from clinging to the teeth or becoming stuck between them. Application takes only a few minutes, and they have the potential to last for up to ten ears for some patients. They wear away gradually with time, and if necessary, we can re-apply in the future. We could combine this with fluoride treatments every six months to help strengthen smiles and reduce the risk of cavities.
Tips for Avoiding Cavities
Along with our treatments, and our visits for dental cleanings, you and your family can take measures from home to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Make sure your child is brushing in the morning and again at night, and using a fluoride toothpaste each time. Kids older than three can use a pea-sized amount, kids younger than three need a rice-sized amount. Each session should last about two minutes. Your kids also benefit from a diet low in sugar and starch, as these particles tend to really cling to the teeth and encourage plaque buildup and tooth decay.
