The Dangers of Damaged Teeth

Even minor damage could increase the chances of a tooth developing a painful cavity or an infection. Other issues could include swelling near a tooth, a toothache, an object lodged between the tooth that floss cannot remove, or an avulsed (knocked-out) tooth. If your child complains about discomfort, or if a tooth is injured, be sure to let us know. We can schedule a time to see them and perform an exam. Then, we create a personalized treatment plan to address the injury. Our team will schedule visits to ensure your family is not sharing the waiting room with anyone else, and we also thoroughly clean and disinfect surfaces in the office and waiting room in between each visit.

Responding to Your Child’s Injury

If your little one breaks a tooth, try to recover any pieces you can and bring them with you to the office wrapped in tissue or in a small container. If a tooth is knocked out completely, then pick it up by the crown, never touch the root, and gently rinse it under water remove dirt or debris. Don’t remove any tissue! Place it in a glass of milk or salt water and bring it to the office with you. If there is bleeding from an injury, use a piece of gauze or a washcloth to stem it. An ice pack or cold compress against the side of the face could reduce swelling. You can offer a children’s pain reliever, like kids ibuprofen or acetaminophen. When you and your little one come see us, feel free to let them bring a blanket or stuffed animal that makes them feel safe and comfortable.
