Helping Little Smiles With Restorative Dentistry
Did you know that we offer restorative dentistry for little smiles? From fillings and crowns to a conservative alternative to root canals, we can help repair children’s smiles. In today’s blog, your team at Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about restorations for kids in Dallas, TX. With restorative dentistry, we can help return little smiles to full function, health, and beauty once again.
When Kids Need Restorative Dentistry
When do children need to receive restorative dentistry? If a tooth is injured, even if the damage appears minimal, care is needed to repair the tooth and prevent the onset of cavities and infections, which can cause serious pain and even threaten stability! We also suggest treatment if they complain about pain in a tooth, as this could indicate the potential presence of a cavity or infection, and we want to bring relief and prevent losing the tooth prematurely, which could lead to misalignment. Our team can provide treatment to repair the tooth, and discuss options like custom mouthguards to help protect kids who play summer sports!
Dental Fillings
If a child has a cavity, then we could help with a dental filling. The procedure only takes one visit. We will examine the tooth to assess the severity of the decay. We numb the tooth with a local anesthesia to keep your child comfortable as we remove decay and clean the tooth. We then prepare and place the filling material. We use a metal-free composite resin that is safe for all ages and more natural in appearance than metal. This will be applied in several layers, and we will sculpt and mold the tooth as the material rues under a light. The last step is to polish the tooth for a brighter appearance.
The same material could also be used to help repair minor injuries, such as a chipped tooth, in a bonding procedure.
Crowns
If your child has a more substantial case of tooth decay, or if the tooth is cracked or chipped, we could help with a crown. The full restoration caps the tooth and could also be used to improve overall bite balance and chewing function in some cases. We will again numb the tooth to ensure your child is comfortable, and we will remove structure to make room to accommodate the restoration. Our team takes images and impressions of the tooth, so we can plan placement in detail. We then attach the crown to the tooth with a powerful bonding agent.
For the side and rear teeth, we could use a stainless-steel option that can easily handle daily bite forces and pressures. For the more visible front facing teeth, we could opt for a more lifelike NuSmile zirconia crown. Once placed, this has the potential to last for years to come!
Pulpotomy Treatments
What if your child has an infected tooth? If this occurs, we will provide relief in one visit with a pulpotomy, a root canal alternative we offer for kids of all ages. Our team will numb the tooth, and we could also offer sedation to help your little one reach a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the process. This also helps kids undergo care if they have anxiety or special needs!
With the pulpotomy, we open the tooth and remove the portions of the interior that have become infected. We add a special medicated filling, and for some, that completes the procedure. But for others, we may need to cap the tooth with a crown. If your little one complains about pain in a tooth, or if they sustain an injury that damages one, then contact our team to discuss possible treatment with restorative dentistry.
