Starting Care With A Checkup And Cleaning

If your little one has not been the dentist before, or if years have elapsed since their last visit, consider seeing us soon! Now is a great time to schedule your child’s next checkup and cleaning visit. In today’s blog, your team at Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about how we help little smiles using routine checkup and cleaning visits!
A Dental Exam for Kids
Children need to undergo a routine checkup every six months starting at around age two. The exam is a chance for us to look closely at their teeth and gums with digital imaging, including safe and gentle digital x-rays. We can then conduct a diagnosis and identify issues that need attention, such as tooth decay, gingivitis in older children, or even concerns with the arrival and loss of baby teeth. The exam visits also give us a chance to talk to kids about how to care for their smile at home, and instill good oral hygiene habits. Children are less likely to develop dental anxiety later in life too, as they become accustomed to seeing the dentist and realizing the importance of these visits!
Cleaning Teeth
We also clean the teeth in the same visit, a process that enables us to remove all plaque and tartar from the teeth. Doing so is vital, as plaque can harden with time into tartar and weaken outer enamel to make tooth decay more likely. The buildup is also linked to teeth stains, sore gums, and bad breath. With a cleaning, we gently and thoroughly remove the layers with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual pick. The process only takes a few minutes, and is crucial for helping smiles of all ages, from toddlers to teens.
Preventive Treatments
Our team could also discuss options to help lower the risk of tooth decay. During each visit, after we clean the teeth, we could apply fluoride to them in a varnish form that coats the teeth and strengthens the outer enamel, making cavities less likely. We could also use dental sealants to coat the rear teeth that kids often have trouble brushing and flossing at home, which then limits the risk of cavities forming there for years at a time.
