Safeguarding Smiles All Summer Long

dallas summer break

Summer break is a fun time for kids, and starting next week many kids will be starting their vacation time. Children need to maintain their oral hygiene routines, and avoid the temptation to snack constantly on sugary foods and drinks. In today’s blog, Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about how to protect your child’s smile during summer break. With the right actions at home, and with routine visits to our team, smiles of all ages can stay strong all summer long, and remain bright and healthy in time for the start of school in August.

Limit Access to Sugar

When kids are at home, they tend to get bored and when they get bored, they snack. If they consume options high in sugar, such as candy and snack cakes, or items high in starch, such as chips, this can leave behind particles that feed bacteria and make the risk of tooth decay and gingivitis higher. Instead, offer healthy alternatives such as fresh fruit and veggies, whole grain bread and crackers, low-fat yogurts and cheeses, and assorted nuts.

Encourage them to drink more were, and cut back on sodas, energy drinks, and sport drinks, which contain harmful sugars and acids. Fruit juice could also be a potential risk! But water rinses the mouth and protects the smile.

Brushing and Flossing

Kids also need to brush and floss daily! During summer break, they can become relaxed in their routine, and may begin to skip these crucial actions. Make sure your children start their day by brushing for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. When evening arrives, before bed they need to floss in between each tooth and then brush a second time for the same amount of time. These actions remove particles of sugar and starch, and can help fight bad breath, teeth stains, cavities, and gingivitis. To make it fun for them, you can let them choose toothbrushes and toothpastes with their favorite characters on them, and discuss electric toothbrushes too!

Checkups and Cleanings

Summer is also a great time to schedule a checkup and cleaning visit for your child, because they don’t have to miss school or afterschool events. With an exam, we can take a close look at the teeth with advanced digital imaging to make a diagnosis with precision and comfort. We can then identify issues like tooth decay and offer care to address them and prevent discomfort and the risk of infection and tooth loss.

In the same visit, we will also clean the teeth, a process that involves gently removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth. The procedure is fast and comfortable, and helps lower the risk of bad breath, cavities, and gingivitis. Between a routine cleaning and brushing and flossing at home, we can all work together to keep little smiles strong and healthy all summer long!

Preventive Treatments

Our team can also provide preventive treatments to help strengthen little smiles and lower the risk of cavities. When you bring your little one in for a checkup and cleaning, after the cleaning we can apply fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form, coating them and strengthening the structure to make cavities less likely. We can also apply dental sealants to the rear teeth, which are often hard for kids to reach when they brush and floss. These can prevent food and drink particles from being caught between the teeth, and lower the risk of cavities in these hard-to-reach portions for years to come, possibly a decade! Application only takes a few seconds for both of these, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as the material cures.
