School Lunch Quiz: Beverage Choices

Do you find yourself tossing a juice box into your child’s lunch, wondering if it’s a safe choice for your son or daughter? Have you begun feeling lately like everything you think you know about oral health and what’s really safe for growing smiles seems to be a bit mixed up? Not to worry! This can become very confusing, particularly when you hear different things all the time. To help you get your details straight regarding drink choices for the upcoming school year, we invite you to check out a brief yet educational quiz!

Quiz Questions: True or False?

  1. True or False: Water is always the best choice for your child (and for you, too). It’s neutral and clear, so it will not harm or stain teeth. Instead, it rinses them clean and actually contributes to good oral health.
  2. True or False: Milk is not neutral like water. However, because it is only slightly acidic and white and is not very high in sugar, it is considered a safe drink for lunchtime. However, remember that drinking it before bed is a no-no.
  3. True or False: Anything with sugar or anything acidic will be a bad choice for your child’s lunch. This includes fruit juices, sweet tea, sodas, sports drinks, and more.

Quiz Answers

  1. True. If your children agree to it, this makes a wonderful choice for lunches!
  2. True. After water, milk is the next safest choice for your child’s oral health during lunch.
  3. True. We are not insisting that you stop putting your child’s favorite juice box in his or her lunch. However, we do encourage you to remember that all sugars (even natural ones) can encourage decay. (With that said, however: 100% fruit juice is a better selection than artificially sweetened drinks).
