How Can You Help Your Kids Protect Their Smiles? Part Two
If you are determined to help your kids keep their smiles healthy, this year, you may have already taken some steps to protect those pearly whites. Brushing and flossing are important, for instance, because they help to remove plaque bacteria from the mouth. That said, there are other simple steps parents can take to keep those precious young smiles healthy. From what they eat to how often they see the dentist, here is what your pediatric dentist wants you to know about dental care for kids.
Help Them Eat Healthily
A healthy diet also helps to protect your family’s oral health, so strive for healthy meals and snacks. Since sugar is what the bacteria in the mouth feed upon, it is especially important for your oral health, that you limit your daily sugar intake. Though moderating their consumption of obvious sweets, like cookies, candies and cupcakes, can help, you should also be careful about what you buy. Many cereals, yogurts, granola bars, juices, and other items are surprisingly high in sugar. Try to opt for those items that don’t list sugar in any form as a leading ingredient.
Take Them for Routine Visits
Finally, regular dental visits are also essential to prolonged oral health. Most kids should visit the dentist at least twice a year for dental cleanings. However, if your kids seem particularly susceptible to acidic erosion, then you may need to schedule more frequent cleanings.
The dentist might also recommend the use of a dental sealant, like fluoride, to help further protect the teeth. To learn more about preventive children’s dentistry, or to schedule a visit, contact our office at 214-321-4880.
