How Sedation Offers Comfortable Treatment For Kids

When your child has dental anxiety or a lack of experience visiting the dentist, we know they can feel nervous. For some, this could make treatment a difficult process. But we can offer comfort with the administration of dental sedation. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about sedation dentistry.

When Kids Need a Calming Solution

If your child has had a poor previous experience at a dentist’s office, or simply has never visited one before, they could feel pretty anxious. Some may have a fear of the dentist, or special needs that make undergoing even minor procedures a difficult process. We may also recommend these options for kids undergoing more extensive treatments. We don’t want these factors to stand between your children and the healthy, beautiful smiles they deserve. With dental sedation, we can offer medication to help them enter deep states of calm, so their experiences are positive ones. We want them to leave with not only a healthy smile, but an eagerness to return to the office!

A Look at Our Experience and Expertise

Our team is proud to work with trained anesthesiologists when we treat children. The anesthesiologists on our team are all members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates, and are board-certified. Whenever a procedure requires the use of a calming medication or local anesthetic, they will be on hand to oversee the process and ensure the safety of our patients!

Three Calming Agents

Our team will take several factors into account when we choose a sedation for our young patients. We look at age, weight, medical history, medications being taken, and anxiety levels. The most common option is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, which is administered through a mask over the nose. Kids breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm. The effects wear off once the procedure ends and kids stay conscious the whole time.

If they need a deeper state of calm, we could offer oral sedation in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. The effects are strong, and kids stay conscious but have little to no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so your kids will likely not return to school. For the deepest form of calm, we could offer IV sedation. If you have any questions about the calming selections we offer for our patients, or if you need to schedule a visit for your little ones, then contact our team today to learn more.
