dallas kids dental emergencies

When your child has pain in his or her mouth, or a tooth that has become chipped or cracked, then this could be considered a dental emergency. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist will talk about how to address common injuries to ease discomfort, and how we can offer treatment to bring your child relief!

Common Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is essentially an injury to the teeth, gums, or mouth that isn’t life threatening, but still needs immediate attention. Examples, include cracked or chipped teeth, or teeth that have become knocked loose or out completely. Unexplained discomfort, objects caught between teeth, and even a loose or lost filling or crown could be an emergency situation as well. Even if these issues occur outside of normal business hours, please give us a call so we can arrange a time to see your little one for treatment right away. Lack of care for aching or injured teeth in a child’s smile could mean the eventual onset of tooth decay or even an infected tooth!

Tips for Easing Discomfort

If there is bleeding, you can help by applying a gauze or piece of cloth to the area, applying pressure until the bleeding stops. A cold compress or lack to the side of the face could also help prevent facial swelling. If something is stucco between the teeth, then have your child rinse with warm water and gently floss on either side of the tooth. If this doesn’t remove the object, contact our team. Don’t use anything other than floss, as you risk damaging teeth or gums. If a tooth is broken, try to bring any pieces with you in a sealed container. If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it under lukewarm water. You want to remove dirt, but not tissues. Place it in a sealed container of milk, and bring with you to the office.

Protecting Little Smiles

To help protect little smiles, be sure your child wears a mouthguard when playing sports or martial arts. Also, practice good oral hygiene, as a tooth free of decay is much stronger and more resistant to injury. If you have any questions about emergency dentistry, or if you would like to schedule a checkup and cleaning for your child, then contact our team today to learn more. We want to help your kids enjoy their best possible smiles!
