How Do We Make Your Children Comfortable During Treatment?

We want to make sure kids of all ages feel comfortable and relaxed during their visits. Along with taking time to discuss care and make them feel welcome, we also offer sedation to help those undergoing extensive care, or who may have special needs or dental anxiety. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist will discuss the benefits of sedation dentistry.

Addressing Anxiety

Children could have dental anxiety as a result of a difficult visit with another practice, or as a result of lack of experience seeing the dentist for treatment. We understand, and take efforts to help them feel more comfortable. We encourage them to bring a favorite toy or blanket if it helps, and we will take time to talk to them about their smiles and help them understand what, if any, treatments will be administered. With sedation, we help kids enter a calm state, which helps those with anxiety or developmental complications that make undergoing a procedure difficulty. This also helps for kids receiving more extensive treatment options, such as a root canal or crown placement.

Nitrous Oxide

Our nitrous oxide option, also known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask over the nose. The child breathes in the gas and enters a euphoric and calm state, with little to no memory of the visit. The effects will wear off almost right away, so your child will be able to return to school!

Oral Sedation

If your little one needs an option with a deeper state of calm, then we could administer sedation through a pill or liquid taken before the procedure. The calming state will be deeper, with the child again having no memory of the procedure. However, the effects will take time to wear off, so your little one likely won’t be able to return to school afterward.

IV

The deepest calming solution available is administered through an IV, with a trained anesthesiologist on hand throughout the entire process. We may suggest this option for kids with more extensive forms of anxiety, or for those with special needs. The effects will take time to wear off, and we will provide detailed aftercare instructions if your child underwent a more extensive treatment, such as a root canal or possibly an extraction. If you have any questions, then please give our team a call!
