ENSURING A COMFORTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS
When we work with children who require more extensive treatment, such as extractions or restoration placement, we may recommend a calming solution. Dental sedation can help children with minor or severe dental anxiety, as well as those with special needs that would make undergoing even routine procedures a difficult prospect. We strive to ensure the comfort of our patients and want them all to enjoy their experience.
We have a number of different options for sedation. The one your child undergoes will depend on his/her anxiety levels, medical history, and other factors. We use highly trained medical doctors when your child needs to be sedated. Our anesthesiologists are all members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA) and are board certified specialists. When choosing one of the options below for your child, we will have one of these trained and certified anesthesiologists on hand for the procedure.
The most common form of sedation, we administer nitrous oxide through a mask over the nose. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide then helps the child enter a relaxed state, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. The effects wear off as soon as the procedure ends, allowing them to return to school in many cases.
For children requiring a deeper state of relaxation, we may recommend oral sedation. We provide a liquid that is taken in our office immediately prior to the treatment. By the time the treatment begins, the patient enters a very relaxed state. The effects will take some time to wear off, so there may be some initial grogginess afterward.
The deepest form of sedation available, IV sedation is administered and monitored by a pediatric anesthesiologist, who will be on hand through the entire procedure. We typically prescribe IV sedation for children with severe anxiety or special needs.
Talk to Our Team
Before recommending any form of sedation, we will want to talk to you and your child. We will also need to see your little one’s medical history. The comfort and safety of our patients is very important to us, so we take every step possible to ensure we select the most appropriate calming solution.
