Which Crown Will Your Child Need?
When your child has a serious cavity, or an issue with the shape of the tooth that impacts bite and alignment, then a crown may be prescribed. We offer two different options for our young patients, stainless steel and zirconia. Which one is right for your smile, and when you should you bring your little one in for a visit with your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist?
Reasons to Recommend a Dental Crown
A dental crown, also known as a cap, covers the entire visible portion of each tooth. Which means they can be used to repair cracked or chipped teeth, improve overall bite balance, address advanced cases of tooth decay or infected teeth, and correct issues with the shape of a tooth. To ensure proper bite balance and good oral health, we will custom-make each one for your smile. To start, we administer a local anesthetic to ensure your little one is comfortable. We will take time to discuss the procedure and address any questions or concerns your child has as well. Next, we remove structure from the tooth to make room for a restoration. After taking digital images, we use the information to design a restoration in a dental lab setting. Finally, we place the completed product with a powerful bonding agent.
The side and rear teeth must absorb serious bite forces and pressure, which is why we suggest a crown created with a durable material. Stainless steel crowns (SSC) are very strong and will ensure your child continues to eat and enjoy a balanced bite.
We also have a more lifelike, but still durable, version for the front-facing teeth. Zirconia is a very strong type of ceramic that we color-match to blend with surrounding teeth. We can also use them for side and rear teeth in some cases due to their strength and durability. Many people prefer this option due to the lifelike appearance.
Steps can be taken to protect your child’s new restorations and prevent common issues like cavities or infection. For example, make sure your child continues to brush and floss properly each day, and bring him or her in for checkups and cleanings every six months. If they play sports, consider a custom mouthguard to better safeguard the smile. If you have any questions, then please contact our team today.
