When Is Crowning Your Child’s Tooth a Good Idea?

Some dental treatments are always a good idea for your child. For example, children always require routine dental checkups and cleanings on a consistent basis in order to keep their teeth healthy, clean, and developing properly. On occasion, they might also require more direct treatment, such as fluoride and/or dental sealants to provide more effective protection against oral bacteria. However, in some specific cases, your child may require treatment to save a tooth that’s more directly compromised. Depending on the nature and extent of your child’s tooth concern, the right solution may be to cap the tooth with a custom-designed, highly conservative dental crown.

When your child’s tooth is significantly damaged

Damage to your child’s tooth, or to any natural tooth structure, can become an increasingly bigger problem over time. Fixing the problem depends on how significant the damage is, yet for some children’s teeth, it can be the ideal solution for restoring the tooth and its proper function. The types of damage that might occur to your child’s tooth can range from the excessive wearing down of it structure to more direct damage, such as a significant fracture or break in the tooth.

When your kid’s tooth receives pulpotomy

Tooth decay is a more common problem for children’s teeth than structural damage, but a dental crown isn’t the usual treatment for it. When the decay is caught early and treated with a biocompatible tooth filling, your child’s tooth can likely be saved with minimal treatment. However, if your child’s tooth decay is substantial, it could require pulpotomy (a minimized version of root canal treatment). To offer optimal protection for the tooth after the treatment, we may suggest putting a customized dental crown over it once the pulpotomy is completed.

When a primary tooth isn’t ready to come out

If your child’s tooth exhibits substantial damage or infection, but the tooth is a primary tooth, then the effort to save it might not seem worth it. Eventually, the tooth will have to fall out to make room for its permanent replacement. However, until it’s ready to fall out, your child’s oral health depends on the primary tooth’s presence. If it isn’t ready to fall out yet, then crowning the tooth to save it for now will be essential to preserving your child’s health smile and oral health development.
