Helping You And Your Kiddo Floss With Ease!

Remember that flossing, of course, is something that you and your child should be doing every single day in order to maintain your best oral health. With that said, you may find yourself feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place when this part of dental hygiene isn’t going so well. You could just give up altogether. However, you’re not sure what to do about the challenges that are making what should be a simple means of smile protection very difficult. Not to worry! Our Dallas, TX pediatric dental team is ready to help you make flossing time fun and easy!

Use Lots Of Floss

We know that for kids, and adults too, it’s often shocking to learn just how much floss you should use for each dental hygiene session. You may assume you just need a few inches or enough to hold and slip between teeth. However, we remind you that you should do your best to use a fresh bit of floss for each set of neighboring teeth you clean between. In addition, it can be very difficult to hold onto a small strand of floss. So, begin with about 18 inches or so and you’ll enjoy an easy time (and successful cleaning).

Keep Fingertips Comfortable

Piggybacking on the fact that you should use lots of floss, you may wonder: How should you and your child hold all of that floss? If you’ve been winding it tightly around fingers, which leaves you with tingling and discomfort, we’re happy to help. Instead, wrap it loosely around your middle fingers on each hand. Then, grab one small segment of the floss with pointers and thumbs. Slide on over to a new segment as you move throughout your smile, inching your way down the entirety of the floss strand!

Be Nice And Gentle

Kids will most certainly not enjoy flossing if it hurts, so remember to have everyone take their time. Maintain a gentle approach (no snapping floss between teeth) for effective, comfortable dental hygiene. Need some in-person tips? Just ask during your next checkup.

Consider Texture

If you’re having a hard time getting floss between teeth or it’s becoming shredded as you remove it from between teeth, this isn’t exactly providing you with the efficient, effective protection you want against things like cavities and gum disease. Remember to try waxed or satin for tight spaces. Try different textures to find one that works for your child’s smile!
