However, when your child learns it’s time for a first filling, well, things don’t always go so smoothly. Remind Your Child To Ask Us Questions

Your child will probably have a lot of questions about dental fillings. This is perfectly normal! Remember, if you’re not sure about an answer, if you aren’t very comfortable that you’re giving the right answer, or if you’re worried your answer is going to cause even more upset or concern if you’re not careful, we are here to help you! Remind your child to write down all of his or her questions about fillings and to ask them the next time we see you (which may be the day of the filling). This will provide lots of reassurance!

Remind Your Kiddo That Nearly Everyone Gets Cavities

Why does everybody need dental checkups and cleanings? Well, because decay is extremely common! So, do your best to remind your child that just about everyone will get a cavity, so even if your little one feels alone in needing a dental filling, it not unusual at all!

You can even try to keep things light-hearted by explaining that thanks to local anesthetic and numb tissue, it can make you sound very funny when you try to talk after a filling (but that it wears off quickly).

You can come up with things that will help your child feel comfortable during a dental filling, if you wish. Spend time together gathering up a favorite blanket and lucky charm, setting up a playlist if you think your child might like to listen to music on the way to our practice, and even coming up with a nice cozy outfit! It will make the visit feel relaxed and easy.
