2 Things To Consider As Halloween Approaches

You’ve probably been noticing it for much longer than you care to think about: Halloween candy has been lining the shelves of your local grocery store for weeks now and we’ve only just made our way into September! As an adult, of course, you can simply ignore the holiday aisle full of sugary delights. However, whether you shop with the kiddos or not, they are well aware that the candy-filled holiday is quickly approaching and you are well aware that this influx of sweets is only going to continue growing. What to do in preparation, you wonder? Consider a couple suggestions from our Dallas, TX pediatric dental care team, so you feel better about things.

#1: Consider Your Response To The Candy Aisle

If you shop with your children in tow, then you know what happens during that inevitable moment when you pass by the Halloween candy aisle. And the end caps with candy on them. And the displays filled to the brim with candy! Your children get excited, they want some, and that’s what keeps their brains’ full attention throughout the duration of your shopping trip. Right? Well, since the big day isn’t going to be here for another month and a half, this is not really the way you want to spend every visit to store. Here’s what our pediatric dental care team thinks you might want to consider:

  • Decide ahead of time what your response is when your kiddos ask for Halloween candy
  • Potential responses might include: We only eat Halloween candy on Halloween, we will only start eating that candy once October begins, you can choose one thing at the store until trick-or-treating, etc.
  • Explain this ahead of your shopping trip to make things easier!

#2: All You Can Do Is Your Best

Assuming you are a parent who gets excited about Halloween and indulges your kiddos in some amount of candy, you’re worried about their oral health. You want to strike up a balance that lets them have fun but that also ensures you’re not guiding them directly toward tooth decay. As a pediatric dental care practice, we remind you: All you can do is your best and, generally speaking, that will suffice! Simply remember the following and remain consistent:

  • Make sure your kids brush and floss as suggested (even on Halloween)
  • Ensure you’re bringing your children in for visits right on the dot, every six months
  • Have kids rinse with water after candy (and, if possible, brush 30 minutes later)
