Easy Changes For Cavity Prevention

You may feel guilty if your child has experienced tooth decay and then required a dental filling. The news you are likely hoping to hear is that there are probably some easy changes you can make to ensure this doesn’t happen again. You may also want us to tell you that it’s okay and that lots of kids get cavities (they really do!). So, shake off the bad feelings and get ready to alter your habits just a bit, so you know you’re protecting your little one’s smile.

No Snacks Before Bed

Do you let your little one eat or drink right before bedtime? This isn’t a good idea unless it’s water. Any sugars, carbs, etc. that remain on teeth will increase your child’s chance of experiencing tooth decay. Remember, as well, that brushing immediately after eating isn’t great either, because this causes an acid state. Brushing during this time is harmful to teeth. So, if your child likes to snack at night, remember that it should go like this: Snack, rinse with water, wait 30 minutes, brush. If you don’t have the time, then say no to the snack.

Choose All Of The Options

When we see you and suggest dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and encourage six-month visits it’s for a very good reason: We’re doing all that we can to help your child avoid tooth decay. If you’re not so sure you understand how these treatments can help, then please ask! We would love to provide you with the education behind how they offer such wonderful protection against cavities. Say “yes” to all of these solutions (and remain diligent with home care) and you’ll be on a successful track toward oral health that sticks around.
