Healthy Tips That Can Help Young Smiles

Are your kids used to getting to eat whatever they want, particularly during busy school days? If so, they could actually be causing damage to their smiles. Too much sugar and a lack of nutrients, can contribute to dental problems like cavities. Acidic beverages can also be bad news for the smile’s health. Fortunately, with a little knowledge and self-control, your whole family can begin to make healthier choices for both your bodies and your smiles!

Give Them the Nutrients Needed to Maintain Healthy Teeth and Gums

Your kids need vitamins and minerals in order to grow strong bodies, and to maintain healthy smiles. Help them get the vitamins they need by supplying them with healthy foods like vegetables and fruits. Lean protein and dairy products can also be helpful, for kids who are not allergic to them.

Of course, it is equally important to avoid serving kids foods that could be detrimental to their oral health. This includes items high in sugar, which can lead to increased plaque buildup. Once hardened onto teeth, plaque bacteria are responsible for causing cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues. So limit how many sugary foods your kids are eating on a daily basis, and teach them that these should be treats, rather than diet mainstays.

Drinking adequate amounts of water, each day, is also important to one’s oral health. In fact, water helps your smile naturally fight plaque buildup, by making it harder for plaque bacteria to stick to the surface of your teeth.

So, rather than relying on juices, sodas, and other sugary and acidic beverages to keep your kids hydrated, make sure they are drinking water as their primary beverage during the day.
