Tooth Extractions: The Basics
You do your best to keep your child safe – and that includes making sure your little one’s smile is in excellent condition. However, sometimes things happen that are out of your control, which is when professionals like dental teams step in to quickly address issues, make repairs, and send you and your child home smiling. When it comes to serious problems with teeth, we may suggest a tooth extraction to safeguard your child’s smile. We understand that you may be scratching your head, wondering why we would want to take a tooth away rather than keep it in place. Rest assured, each decision we make is with your child’s best interest at heart. We invite you to learn more with the following information, so you feel more comfortable and knowledgeable regarding extractions:
What’s An Extraction?
A tooth extraction is simply the surgical removal of your child’s tooth. Keep in mind that we will thoroughly numb the target tooth in addition to the tissues surrounding that tooth before we begin. Then, we will carefully loosen the problem tooth and remove it from its location using special dental instruments.
Your Child’s Comfort
Concerned that your child will feel too anxious to undergo treatment or that your child will not feel comfortable? Forget those worries. Our goal is to keep your child comfortable, feeling safe, and to improve his or her oral health. If local anesthesia is not sufficient, we also offer sedation dentistry for our patients. Your child may receive either oral sedation (pill form) or IV sedation (intravenously administered) for a deeply relaxing experience.
The Benefits
Sometimes a tooth is too unhealthy to respond to restorative treatment and must be removed. This commonly happens if a tooth is severely damaged beyond repair or in the case of a serious infection. Leaving the tooth as it is may result in problems like difficulty with eating and clear speaking, as well as discomfort and the potential spread of infection to nearby structures. Or, a tooth may need to be removed to make room for proper alignment or other concerns. In any case, the tooth extraction will set the foundation for optimal oral health.
