Schedule A Checkup This Fall

dallas kids exam

Fall is just a few days away, what better way to start a new season then with a checkup and cleaning for your child? With a dental exam, we can make sure your child enjoys optimal oral health and a strong smile. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about how we examine and clean your little one’s smile!

The Importance of a Dental Exam

A dental checkup is vital for kids of all ages. With regular visits, we can monitor the smile as your child grows, watching for the earliest indicators of common issues like tooth decay and gingivitis. We also make sure baby teeth erupt and fall out on time, so permanent ones can erupt properly and prevent misalignment from occurring. These visits also allow us to help kids better understand their smile and the importance of caring for them, so they avoid anxiety about the dentist and can better maintain good oral health.

The Cleaning Process

In the same appointment as the checkup, we will also conduct a dental cleaning. While brushing and flossing are very important, this cannot remove all plaque and tartar. Your child needs a professional cleaning for that! With an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool, we will gently and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of the teeth. We then polish the teeth for a brighter appearance, and to make it more difficult for plaque and tartar to form on the surfaces of the teeth. This also helps fight teeth stains and bad breath!

Continuing Your Smile’s Care at Home

You can also help safeguard your child’s oral health with care at home. You can assist or monitor them as they brush in the morning and at night, to ensure they are cleaning their teeth for at least two minutes. Kids three and younger need a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, while everyone else needs a pea-sized amount. They also need to floss before they brush that second time in the evening, so they can remove what is trapped between the teeth. Try to cut back on how much sugar and starch they had in their diets, as this can help limit the risk of tooth decay.
