Are You a Good Dental Role Model?
As a parent, you likely already know that your kids are watching and often emulating all that you do. This can be great, when you are setting a good example, such as eating all your vegetables, or reading a book before bed. It can also be a little frightening, like if a PG13-rated word slips out during traffic or you think you’re sneakily stealing a cookie before dinner. To help make sure you’re setting a good dental health example, it is important to make sure that you follow your own dentist’s advice.
Do You Complain About Brushing Your Teeth?
If you want your kids to have a positive attitude about dental hygiene, it is best that they not hear you complaining about having to brush your own teeth. Sure, dental hygiene (including brushing and flossing) can feel like a chore, even for grown-ups, but it is best to keep this opinion to one’s self. While in front of your kids, why not talk about why hygiene is important, or share gratitude that you enjoy a healthy smile.
Do You Floss after Brushing?
Again, brushing is important, but so is flossing. If you, yourself, are skipping this key step in preventive care, it will be hard to convince your kids of the necessity of flossing. So, make it a priority to brush and floss each night, as a family. That way you can all enjoy the benefits of good hygiene.
How Often Do You See the Dentist?
Preventive dental care is key to a healthy smile. This includes routine dental checkups and cleanings. Both kids and adults should see the dentist at least twice a year. In fact, it may be easier to take your kids, happily, to the dentist, if you show them a positive attitude about scheduling and attending your own checkups.
