Treatment For Your Child’s Cavity

Children can often develop tooth decay, and when this happens, the tooth can hurt and could become infected with time, increasing the risk of tooth loss. But we can offer treatment to stop tooth decay and protect the tooth, and to also help prevent cavities too! In today’s blog, Pediatric Dental Care in Casa Linda talks about treating cavities for kids in Dallas, TX.
The Causes of Tooth Decay
How does a cavity form in your little one’s tooth? For many, factors like poor brushing and flossing, combined with a diet high in sugar, can promote plaque and tartar buildup, which weakens outer enamel to cause tooth decay. Other factors include injuries to the tooth or teeth grinding that can compromise outer enamel. When a cavity forms treatment is needed, even if this happens in a baby tooth. While baby teeth do fall out on their own, this could happen months or even years after the cavity forms, so ignoring it could allow infection to develop and then increase the risk of premature tooth loss and misalignment. But how do you know when to bring your child in for an appointment?
The Warning Signs of a Cavity
How do you know if your little one needs to see us? If you maintain regular visits, then we will likely catch this in the earliest stages of demineralization, before pain even occurs. Otherwise, please let us know when your child complains about a toothache, or discomfort when eating or drinking. Pain or sensitivity that lasts for more than a day could likely indicate the presence of a decay, and once the tooth hurts, that means the decay is likely in the advanced stages, bordering on infection. Treatment now is crucial to avoid the risk of tooth loss, or the need to extract it and prevent the spread of infection.
Dental Fillings
One of the more common ways we treat a cavity in little smiles is with a dental filling. The restoration involves the use of a safe and biocompatible metal-free material known as composite resin. Made from a blend of glass-like and acrylic-like particles, this can better blend with the smile than metal options, and also bonds with the structure to provide repair for years to come. We will numb the tooth to keep your child cozy as we remove decay and prepare the tooth to receive the filling. We then apply the composite resin in several layers, and sculpt the tooth to ensure proper balance. The material is then cured under a light. The last step is to polish the tooth!
Dental Crowns
What if we find the decay is too severe to be treated with a filling, or if the tooth is infected? For severe decay, we may need to numb the tooth and remove more structure, which means we repair the tooth by placing a dental crown. Our team will choose from stainless steel or a zirconia option, which can repair the tooth and stay in place for years to come. If the tooth is infected, we could offer an alternative to the traditional root canal, a more conservative and gentle option known as a pulpotomy. This allows us to remove the infected portions of the interior tissues, and then replace them with a medicated filling. The final step is to cap the tooth with a crown.
Prevention with Fluoride and Sealants
Our team also wants to help kids avoid the onset of tooth decay! Along with cleanings to remove plaque and tartar that cause tooth decay, we could apply fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form to strengthen the outer enamel and lower the risk or cavities in the months to come. For protection that lasts years, we can coat the hard-to-reach rear teeth with dental sealants, which lowers the risk of cavities forming where kids have trouble cleaning their smiles!
