How Sedation Provides A Comfortable Experience For Kids

Every kid needs to see the dentist for routine care, because this helps them avoid the onset of issues like tooth decay and gingivitis. But we know that some kids have anxiety about the process, and we want to ensure each and every child has a positive experience. Fortunately, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist can help with dental sedation!
Our Expertise
Our team members include members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates, who are also board-certified specialists. They are always present and monitoring kids during the use of calming medications, ensuring their comfort and safety the entire time.
We will choose from three different options, and take a number of factors into account when doing so. For example, we will look at any medications your children are currently taking, as well as their age, weight, and medical history. We also take their anxiety levels or special needs into account, so we choose the one that provides an optimal experience for your child. Each experience should be a positive one, and we work hard to ensure this for each and every child that we see!
Dental Sedation for Kids
What options do we have available? The most common is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. We will administer this with a mask over the nose. Children breathe in the gas and enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little memory of the process. The levels of sedation can be adjusted during treatment, and the effects wear off fast, so kids can even return to school in some cases.
If your little one needs a more substantial level of calming, we could offer the oral conscious option. Your little ones may need to avoid food and drink in the hours before the procedure, and they will take the calming medications in a pill or liquid form. They enter a deeper state of calm with little to no memory of the process, but they remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects do take time to wear off completely, so they likely won’t return to school that day.
The deepest level of calming is administered intravenously with IV sedation. Children enter a sleep-like state and have no memory of the process. Again, they will be a bit groggy after the procedure ends. If you have any questions about our approach to sedation dentistry, then reach out to our office today to get started.
