How We Help Kids With Dental Sedation

dallas dental sedation for kids

Do you have children with anxiety or special needs, which can complicate the ability for kids to undergo even minor treatments? If so, don’t let their oral health continue to erode! Talk to our team about calming medications. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about dental sedation for kids and how this can help ensure a comfortable visit for all!

How We Choose Sedation for Your Child

We have three different options to choose from, but how do we select the right one for your kids? Our team will take a number of different factors into account, such as your child’s age, weight, and medical history, including any medications they are currently taking. We also assess overall anxiety levels and consider any special needs your child may have. The process will be overseen by trained anesthesiologists, who are members of our team that also have membership with the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates, and are board-certified specialists with the skills and experience to ensure the safety and comfort of your little ones.

Nitrous Oxide

One common and mild option is nitrous oxide, which is administered through a mask over the child’s nose. The child breathes in the gas and enters a deep state of calm. They remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist, but are cozy and have little memory of the process. The levels can be adjusted during treatment and the effects wear off once the procedure ends, which means children can return to school in some cases.

Oral Conscious

Should your little one require a deeper form of calm, we could opt for oral conscious sedation. This is administered through a pill or liquid, and kids may need to avoid food and drink in the hours before the procedure. They enter a deeper state of calm and have no memory of the procedure, but still remain conscious. The effects take time to wear off, so kids will need to go home afterward and likely cannot return to school that day.

IV

The deepest form of calming we offer children is IV sedation, which helps them enter a deep and sleep-like state, with no memory of the procedure. We will carefully monitor their heartrates, and the effects will again take time to wear off fully.
