Helping Little Smiles With Emergency Dentistry

Summer is a time when many kids play sports or just horse around outside. Sometimes, this can lead to damaged teeth or even ones knocked loose or out! In these situations, your child may need dental emergency treatment. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist discusses emergency dentistry and how we repair little smiles!
What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
As we mentioned above, a dental emergency could include a tooth that has been chipped or cracked. If your child sustains an injury to the face or jaw and no damage is visible, consider an appointment since a fracture in the tooth could be practically invisible to the naked eye. If a tooth is knocked loose or out completely, then your child should see us right away. An emergency visit could also be necessary if your little one reports sudden pain in a tooth. Just give our team a call. If this happens during normal business hours then we may try to see your child same-day. If the injury occurs outside of normal business hours, call us and leave a message. A team member will reach out to you with possible appointment times quickly!
Easing Initial Discomfort
You can take a few steps to help ease discomfort following your child’s injury. Have your little one rinse with warm water and you could use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. To help control facial swelling, you can apply a cold compress to the side of your kid’s face. You can also give your little one an age-appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever. If the tooth is knocked out, then pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the root. Place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it to the office with you.
Repairing Teeth and Preventing Injuries
Our team can restore a knocked-out tooth to its proper place in the smile. If a tooth is injured, we could take on minor damage with composite resin, the same material we use in our tooth-colored dental fillings. For more substantial injuries, we could place a stainless steel or NuSmile zirconia dental crown. Our team could also discuss creating a mouthguard to better protect your child’s smile if he or she plays full contact sports.
