Providing A Comfortable Treatment With Dental Sedation

Our team wants to help ensure that every child, even those with special needs or anxiety, feels comfortable and relaxed when undergoing treatment. With sedation dentistry, we can offer three different selections to choose from to help kids enjoy their time in the office. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about our approach to sedation dentistry.
When We Prescribe Dental Sedation
When do we recommend a sedation solution for our patients? This could be helpful for those undergoing more extensive treatments, such as a pulpotomy or a tooth extraction. If children have special needs, this could ensure a calm and positive experience. In addition, sedation could also help calm kids with serious anxiety about the dentist. We want to ensure your little ones have a positive experience in the office, so they look forward to their visits and better understand the importance of good oral health. Our team is also trained in how to speak to kids and answer their questions, so they feel heard and welcomed. We also have team members who are trained in administering anesthesia, and who are also members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates!
Choosing the Right Option for Your Children
We currently offer three different forms of calming medications, so how do we choose which one is right for your children? We will take a number of different factors into account. For example, we will look at your child’s age, weight, medical history, and any medications they are currently taking. We also take anxiety levels into account as well.
Three Possible Selections
The most common option is a mild form known as nitrous oxide. We administer this through a mask over the nose, and kids breathe in a gas to enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. The effects can be adjusted during treatment and then wear off once the procedure ends. Some kids could even return to school!
The next is a deeper form known as oral sedation. We give this to children before the procedure in a pill or liquid form, and they may need to avoid food and drink in the hours before the procedure. They enter a deep state of calm, with little to no memory of the procedure at all.
The deepest option is IV sedation, and is administered intravenously. They enter an almost sleep-like state, and again have no memory of the procedure. With oral and IV, the effects take time to wear off, so kids likely won’t be able to return to school and will need to rest and recover.
