When Your Kids Need A Dental Crown

In our last blog, we talked about how we can place a filling to take on tooth decay and minor injuries to little smiles. But what if your kids need a more substantial repair? In these situations, we could help with a crown. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about repairing little smiles with a dental crown.
Repairing Little Smiles
A dental crown is sometimes referred to as a full restoration, meaning it covers the entirety of the tooth structure above the gum line. Which means we can use them to address more serious oral health concerns. For example, our team can repair cracked or chipped teeth to prevent decay and negative changes to the smile’s appearance. Placement could also address tooth decay too severe for a filling, or even complete a pulpotomy for an infected tooth. We can use them to help improve bite function and chewing capabilities as well.
Placing the Crown
To place a crown, we will start by numbing the tooth with a local anesthetic to ensure your child is comfortable. We can also discuss sedation, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation, to help kids enter a deep state of calm with little to no memory of the procedure. Once your little one is comfortable, our team will remove structure from the tooth to make room for the restoration. We then attach the restoration with a powerful bonding agent, ensuring a proper fit and a balanced bite. The restoration could be made from stainless steel, particularly if we place it on the side of rear teeth, which endure greater bite forces. We also have NuSmile zirconia, which is very durable and also more lifelike in appearance.
Safeguarding Their Smiles
Once it is in place, good oral hygiene habits can help safeguard it, as well as the other natural teeth, to ensure your little one continues to enjoy good oral health. Our goal is to prevent the need for a restoration if possible! Make sure your kids brush each day with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes in the morning and at night. Kids also need to floss as soon as there are teeth sitting side-by-side, and this should happen in the evening before they brush that second time. Be sure to bring them in for a checkup and cleaning every six months too!
