How Sedation Improves Your Child’s Comfort

We see kids of all kinds, and sometimes they have anxiety or special needs that makes undergoing even minor treatments a difficult process. We take time to speak with them and help them feel comfortable. But we also have medications that assist too! In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about the benefits of dental sedation for nervous kids, so they can obtain the care necessary to enjoy better oral health.
When Kids Need a Calming Medication
If children have dental anxiety, we understand their fears are real and will never minimize them. Inserted, we will answer their questions and talk to them about the treatment process, so they feel listened to and enjoy their time with us. But if the anxiety cannot be mediated with talk alone, we can discuss sedation to help them enter a deep state of calm and euphoria. We also offer this for kids with special needs or other factors that could complicate their ability to receive treatment. When your kids receive sedation, they will do so from a board-certified specialist who are also members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates.
How We Select an Option for Your Child
We take a number of factors into account when we choose a calming solution for your child. For example, our team will look at your child’s age, weight, medical history, and assess any medications they are taking. We also take into account the severity of the treatment they are receiving, as there is a difference between placing a filling or extracting a tooth.
Our Sedation Options
We offer three different options for kids. The most common and mild solution is nitrous oxide, which is administered through a mask over the nose. Kids breathe in a gas and enter a calm state. They remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed, and we can adjust levels during care. The effects wear off right away, so your child could potentially return to school!
If they needs a deeper state of calm, we could offer oral sedation in the form of a pill or liquid prior to the procedure. They still remain conscious but will have little memory of the procedure afterward. The effects take time to wear off completely.
The deepest option is IV, and helps them enter a more sleep-like state with no memory of the procedure. If you have any questions about how we ensure a calm and comfortable visit for our little patients, then contact our team today.
