How Dental Sealants Prevent Cavities

To help lower the risk of cavities, we suggest better home care routines and of course, visits for checkups and cleanings. But did you know that we also have preventive treatments that can fight the onset of cavities? In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about cavity prevention with dental sealants.
Tooth Decay and Little Smiles
How do cavities form in your child’s smile? All of our teeth are coated in enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. A cavity occurs when the enamel no longer protects the sensitive inner dentin from exposure to bacteria. This could happen due to plaque and tartar buildup brought on by foods and drinks high in sugar and starch, and poor brushing and flossing habits. When tooth decay forms, they will grow in severity unless treated and could lead to infection or even premature tooth loss. But our team can offer preventive visits to help lower the risk of tooth decay!
Dental Sealants
Often, kids have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss. This means that particles from the foods and drinks we consume become trapped between the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities. But with dental sealants, our team can place a special acrylic coating on the rear molars, which prevents food and drink particles from being caught between the teeth. Application takes a few seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour. Once in place, these layers can remain intact for up to ten years, protecting kids from cavities and infection. We can always re-apply as needed too.
Fluoride Treatments
We can also apply fluoride directly to the teeth in a varnish form as part of your children’s checkup visit. Fluoride strengthens the outer enamel, even the weakened portions, to make the risk of a cavity less likely. The application only takes a few seconds and again, kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as it cures. You can also help by making sure your kids use fluoride toothpaste when they brush their teeth. Kids three and younger should use a rice-sized amount, and kids over the age of three should use a pea-sized amount.
