What Happens During A Kid’s Checkup?

dallas kids checkups

We urge parents to bring their kids in for a dental checkup at least once every six months. During this visit, we can take steps to help diagnose and protect smiles from issues like tooth decay and more. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist talks about what to expect from your child’s routine checkup visit.

The Dental Exam Process

During the dental exam process, we will sit your child down in a chair, with chairside monitors nearby. Our team will talk to your little one about their oral health habits. We then use digital x-rays and intraoral cameras to obtain clear and detailed images of their teeth, gums, roots, and oral structures. These high-definition images will be available instantly on the monitors, so we can walk your little one through the diagnostic process. If we discover any signs of concern, such as a cavity, we can plan treatment to halt discomfort and protect their smile from major complications like premature tooth loss.

Applying Fluoride

In the same visit, we can also apply a unique treatment designed to help lower the risk of tooth decay. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that has been shown to strengthen enamel to fight the onset of cavities. We will apply this to the teeth in a special varnish form, which strengthens the outer enamel, even the weakened portions, to keep cavities at bay. The application process only takes a few seconds, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as it cures. We can apply fluoride at each checkup visit!

Dental Cleanings

Along with an exam and fluoride treatment, in the same visit we can clean the teeth to remove harmful layers of plaque and tartar from the teeth. While brushing and flossing can limit the severity of plaque and tartar, only a professional cleaning can remove these layers completely. The procedure only takes a few minutes and can lower the risk of bad breath, teeth stains, tooth decay, and gingivitis. We then polish the teeth so they look brighter. The process also makes it more difficult for plaque and tartar to adhere to the teeth before your child’s next visit.
