Is Your Child Having Trouble Chewing?
Have you noticed that your child seems to be having some chewing problems while eating? If you cannot quite put your finger on the reason, it can cause you some serious distress. After all, enjoying snacks and meals should be enjoyable, not fraught with frustration. To get started, we encourage you to consider some common factors that may be the root of your child’s current challenge. Of course, if you need additional help, all it takes is setting up a checkup and coming in to see us!
It Might Be Pain
Your child might be having chewing problems due to pain. Ask your child if his or her teeth feel okay. You may discover that discomfort is making it very difficult to chew through food and may even be causing some irritability. When pain is the culprit, schedule a checkup ASAP, so we may identify the cause and provide a filling or other treatment to solve the concern.
It Could Be Misalignment
Have your child’s permanent teeth come in and you’re noticing that chewing problems have accompanied this milestone? If your son or daughter’s teeth aren’t properly aligned, it can make for challenging chewing. Remember, teeth that fit together properly don’t tap, hit, or grind against one another. Teeth that are not aligned do have this concern. Schedule a checkup and speak with us about orthodontics.
It Might Be A Lack Of Moisture
If your child is suffering from dry mouth (not enough saliva), this can make breaking food down much more difficult. Dry mouth can occur due to congestion, certain medications, mouth breathing, and more. Have your child sip a bit of water during meals and, of course, see us soon for help with this concern.
