3 Ways to Be Kind to Your Teeth

Who doesn’t want to add more kindhearted moments to their life? It may mean taking a breath and thinking before your speak, or letting the other person go first in line. There are lots of opportunities to be kind at home—even extending to seemingly small things like how you care for your teeth. Share these pointers to your young ones, and help them practice kind techniques as well. The smiles in your whole family will benefit from this thoughtful care.

Brush Gently

Brushing twice a day is an important habit to develop. About two minutes of brushing is recommended, reaching all the surfaces of all the teeth on the upper and lower jaw, and gently brushing the tongue. You might think that 1 minute of vigorously scrubbing the teeth might be just as good, but that’s not true. Hard brushing can irritate gums, and doesn’t do a better job of cleaning the teeth. If you have questions about brushing, we have a caring staff of pediatric dental experts who are happy to demonstrate at checkup and cleaning appointments.

Drink Lots of Water

Water helps the teeth in many ways. For one thing, water rinses food particles off the teeth, and away from the gums between brushing. This removes particles that could otherwise promote the growth of oral bacteria. Drinking water can replace drinking sugary drinks, another benefit for teeth. If you are drinking tap water, your tooth enamel is benefitting from the fluoride supplied by most cities. And staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water means adequate saliva to prevent dry mouth.

Look for Opportunities to Smile

Your teeth like a chance to see world, and smiles are a great way to spread a positive outlook to family,  friends and neighbors.
