Are Your Kids Really Taking Great Care of Their Teeth?
Most parents go to a lot of trouble trying to make sure their kids are healthy. From doctor’s appointments, to healthy diets, safety gear for athletic events and many other protective measures, good parents want to do all they can to ensure their children grow up strong and healthy. When it comes to kids’ oral health, however, it is all-too-easy to overlook some surprisingly simple steps that can be taken to ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy. If you want to do more to make sure your kids’ smiles are really well cared for, start by making sure they brush and floss their teeth correctly, every single day!
Monitor Their Dental Hygiene; Technique Matters When It Comes to Brushing and Flossing
Even after your kids become old enough to brush their teeth on their own, they still require your supervision, for a number of reasons. First, it is important to make sure your kids are not swallowing toothpaste as they brush. Toothpaste isn’t poisonous, however it can adversely affect your kids’ development of healthy adult teeth.
Secondly, though, you will likely need to guide your children in using proper technique as they brush and floss, and insist they spend the amount of time necessary to adequately do both. Without supervision, kids are likely to rush through the motions, minimizing the preventive benefits of dental hygiene. It’s not enough to simply make sure they got their toothbrush wet. It is best, especially with young children, to stay in the room with them. Best yet, why not brush and floss your own teeth as your kids are doing so, in order to set a healthy example for them?
