What’s So Bad About Plaque?

You have probably heard about plaque for most of your life – if not, then you’re certainly receiving an earful as a parent. As a result, you have likely come to learn that plaque is bad (but that does not mean you’re completely sure what makes it such an awful substance). The good news is that you can help your child control plaque, so you don’t need to worry about potential side effects. Even better news? We are prepared to fill you in on the essential details, so you feel knowledgeable on this topic. And of course, remember, we will always be glad to answer questions during preventive care visits.

It’s Very Sticky

Plaque is an extremely sticky substance. Unfortunately, it is full of bacteria and it sticks to your teeth every single day, forming a film. The bacteria within plaque feed on the carbohydrates in your child’s mouth. When they digest these carbs, they release acids, which temporarily results in an acidic environment.

It Leads To Serious Problems

If you ignore plaque and fail to brush your teeth or visit us for preventive care appointments, the plaque will harden (into a substance called tartar) and accumulate. As a result, tooth tissue may weaken and gum tissue may become irritated. When left uncontrolled, this issue may lead to tooth decay and/or gum disease, which will then require restorative care like fillings or crowns – or, gum disease treatment.

Don’t Worry – We Can Help

First, we can help by showing you the best methods for brushing and flossing at home, which is a significant factor in removing plaque on a daily basis and preventing it from hardening. In addition, one portion of preventive care visits is a dental cleaning, during which we remove the tartar and plaque that remains on your child’s teeth (rest easy – nobody can thoroughly control plaque on their own at home).
