A Quick Guide to Children’s Dental Health

Your children’s teeth are more than just milestones; they’re placeholders for the adult teeth that will eventually grow in their place. Therefore, keeping their primary teeth healthy and in good shape is as important, and sometimes more so, as keeping your own smile healthy and disease-free. The first thing they should learn, then, is how to brush and floss their teeth effectively (and consistently) at home. Since professional dental care is also a vital part of children’s good dental health, you should also teach your children the importance of visiting the dentist regularly, and what to expect when they do.

Learning About Dental Hygiene

If you don’t brush and floss your teeth correctly or as often as you should, then you will not be able to teach your children to do so, either. Lead by example; be sure to brush your teeth at least twice every day and to floss at least once, and do so with your child present so he/she grows accustomed to the habit. You can make the activity more fun by playing games or telling a story that ties in with keeping their teeth clean.

Growing Accustomed to the Dentist

It’s natural for children to be wary of the unknown, and even more so for them to be apprehensive when visiting the dentist’s office for the first time. Instead of waiting until your child has to be seen, bring your child with you during your own dental appointments so he or she can grow accustomed to the environment.

Undergoing Treatment, When Necessary

Once children recognize and are comfortable with the dentist’s office, and after they begin attending regular visits of their own, there may come a time when more than just a cleaning and checkup is required. If your child develops a cavity or suffers from malocclusion, or if one or more teeth become damaged, then a custom restoration could be necessary. By explaining the treatment and how it can improve your child’s dental health, we can help your child remain calm and comfortable throughout his/her procedure.
