Protecting Smiles With Emergency Dentistry

In just a couple of weeks, most kids across the DFW area will be home on summer break! Between sports and kids being kids, dental emergencies are bound to happen. In today’s blog, Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about emergency dentistry in Dallas, TX, and how to protect smiles!
Preventing Injuries During Summer Break
With kids, accidents and injuries are going to happen. But there are still a few steps you can take to help minimize these incidents. For example, you could make sure your child wears a mouthguard if they play sports, or box or practice martial arts. You can buy one from a sporting goods store, or talk to our team about a custom option. Wearing these helps limit the risk of chipped, cracked, or knocked out teeth. Also, make sure your kids avoid chewing on ice, as this could chip a tooth. Be sure they see us for a checkup and cleaning, and practice good oral hygiene habits, as this helps prevent the decay or function that could weaken teeth and leave them more susceptible to injuries and discomfort.
Responding to a Damaged Tooth
When a tooth is damaged, you should call our office right away for emergency dentistry. If you reach us during our normal hours, we will try to see your child same-day or early the next day if possible. If you call us and we are closed, then leave a message so we can reach out to you with possible appointment times. In the meantime, your child can take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and you can use cloth or gauze to stem bleeding. Applying a cold compress to the side of your face could reduce facial swelling too. If a tooth is chopped, try to receive any piece and bring them with you. If a tooth is knocked out completely, only pick it up by the crown, don’t touch the roots, and put it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to the office!
