Here Comes Halloween! Is It Only About Sugar?
Halloween! It’s headed this way and you can practically taste the sugary sweetness already! Maybe you love the overload of treats that this day brings. Maybe it causes you some stress! We know that your kids’ oral health is extremely important to you, so figuring out how to mix fun with some truly effective smile protection feels a little confusing. Our Dallas, TX team absolutely knows how you’re feeling (all of the other parents out there are going through the same thing!). So, why not take a new look at this fun holiday, as you enjoy the goodies but remember that there’s more to Halloween than candy.
Have Halloween Game Night
We are certainly well aware of the fact that many of our patients are going to be spending part of Halloween evening out and about, gathering up loads of yummy candy as they trick or treat! This is, of course, an enjoyable pastime that we understand. However, we remind you that when you’re home, there’s more to do than just chow down on sugar. Why not consider playing a game together as a family? It’s free of sugar, it’s enjoyable, and if you take a look, there are lots of Halloween-themed family board games, card games, and more out there! (Then again, the classics are just as much fun! Put on some Halloween music and it’s a party!).
Choose Halloween Movie Watching, Instead!
Watching a Halloween movie together? This on its own isn’t going to lead to cavities or any other oral health related problems! Instead, it will just put a smile on everyone’s face. Remember, you don’t have to watch something super scary or spooky in order for it to “count” as a Halloween-themed movie! Just check out “non scary Halloween movies” in an online search and you are sure to find a long list of options that will make your movie-watching experience fun! Side note: We remind you that if you’re planning on snacking during the movie, either reach for something smile safe or just remember to drink water, while you nibble and watch, to keep smiles rinsed!
Skip Candy, Go For Color-Themed Eating!
Eat by color, not by sweetness! Focus on the hue of your food instead of whether or not it classifies as a “treat,” for some Halloween fun. Some ideas include:
- Orange-colored pasta, cheese sauces, and even macaroni and cheese
- Black bean or pumpkin soup
- Roasted carrots
- Orange slices
- Black olives
- Orange-hued hummus and crackers
- Sweet potatoes
- …You get the idea!
