Our team wants to help kids of all ages, from babies and toddlers to teens, enjoy good oral health. We have a few suggestions to help parents protect little smiles by fighting tooth decay and even gingivitis risk. In today’s blog, your team at Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about keeping children’s smiles healthy in Dallas, TX.
The Risks of Tooth Decay and More
First, let’s talk about tooth decay. With Halloween around the corner and the holiday season right behind, kids will be inundated with sugar. When children consume foods and drinks with lots of sugar, and starch, this leaves behind particles clinging to the teeth or caught between them. At this point, harmful oral bacteria can break down the particles, which coats the teeth in plaque and weakens enamel to cause cavities. Teeth begin to ache, and children could be vulnerable to infection or possibly even premature tooth loss. As children grow older and enter the teen years, these same factors could lead to gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis. But there are a few ways you can help keep your child’s smile healthy.
Better Brushing and Flossing
One vital way to help keep your child’s smile healthy is better brushing and flossing habits, which helps clear away food and drink particles before bacteria can consume them, controlling plaque and tartar buildup. Kids of all ages should brush first thing in the morning for two minutes. Kids under three should use a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, kids over the age of three should use a pea-sized amount. This helps strengthen outer enamel.
Children also need to floss every evening before they brush that second time. When children floss up and down each side of every tooth, they dislodge food particles that a toothbrush cannot reach. The brushing action then removes these particles completely. Kids can use a floss pick in early ages, graduating to floss string or tape as their dexterity improves.
Limiting Sugar Intake
Another key way to help keep your child’s smile healthy is by limiting overall sugar intake. Make sure they enjoy Halloween treats and holiday cookies in moderation. Try to encourage these just after dinner, when the body’s increased saliva production helps remove the sugar and starch particles. Having them with a glass of water is helpful too. Offer them items like fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks. You can offer them with healthy dips like peanut butter or cottage cheese. Be sure you pick whole grain breads and crackers. Healthy snacks can help limit the risk of cavities when kids are home and out of school during the holidays.
Checkups and Cleanings
To help keep your child’s smile healthy, they need to see the dentist. Which is why we urge parents to bring their kids in for a checkup and cleaning every six months. With routine visits, we can keep a close eye on the teeth and catch issues like tooth decay in the earliest stages. We can halt decay and prevent the need for fillings with options like Silver Diamine Fluoride or Curodont, and if a cavity had fully formed, we could treat it with a composite resin filling that is safe and gentle for kids.
In the same visit, we will also clean the teeth to help remove plaque and tartar buildup to keep enamel strong and prevent the onset of cavities in kids of all ages, starting as young as age two!
Fluoride and Dental Sealants
To help prevent cavities altogether, we can also apply fluoride directly to the teeth in a varnish for following the cleaning, a process that takes seconds. This helps strengthen outer enamel. We also have dental sealants, which coat the rear teeth and prevent food and drink particles from being caught between them, lowering the risk of tooth decay forming where little ones have trouble reaching when they brush and floss. These can stay in place for years to come, as many as ten in some cases, and again only takes seconds to apply!
