Preparing Smiles For A New School Year
While it’s still July, the beginning of the school year will be here before you know it! Which means amidst prepping with back-to-school shopping and other preparations, you may forget about your child’s smile. In today’s blog, your team at Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about back-to-school visits for kids, and how you can help with an appointment now or in the next few weeks.
Starting Better Care at Home
When school begins, kids will need to return to a routine schedule, with regular bedtimes and early rising. You can help them (and their smiles) by moving them toward a routine now. For example, really make sure they brush their teeth for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste before bed. They also need to floss before bed too, which removes what a toothbrush alone cannot reach. When they get up., they need to brush their teeth first thing. You can also help their smiles by limiting their access to sugary foods and drinks. Instead, offer them more water and for snacks, fresh fruits and veggies. You can even pick up hummus, cottage cheese, and other healthy dips to add. Better care at home and healthier snack choices can go a long way to preventing cavities.
Checkups and Cleanings
Now is the perfect time to schedule a checkup and cleaning with our team. With the dental exam, we will look at the teeth, gums, and the interior structures with digital x-rays and intraoral cameras. These systems use less radiation, provide instant high-definition images of the smile, and allow us to conduct a diagnosis with precision and accuracy. We then create a treatment plan to address concerns like tooth decay, and discuss ways to better protect smiles in the future.
In the same visit, we will also conduct a cleaning. The dental cleaning involves gently and thoroughly removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth with an ultrasonic scaling device. We then follow with a manual pick for any stubborn portions. The process helps lower the risk of bad breath, stained teeth, cavities, and even gingivitis.
Cavity Prevention
Our team would also love to discuss treatments to help lower the risk of tooth decay in little smiles. For example, during the checkup and cleaning process, we can also apply a fluoride varnish to the surfaces of the teeth to strengthen the outer enamel and fight cavities. We can also apply dental sealants to the rear teeth, which are often difficult for kids to reach when they brush and floss. The sealants stay in place for years to come and prevent cavities from forming between the molars. If we find your child has weakened enamel, we can strengthen areas with Curodont gel, and even apply Silver Diamine Fluoride to the teeth to halt the process of decay. We want to help protect your child’s smile from decay and infection, so they don’t develop pain or risk early tooth loss and misalignment.
Early Detection
Our team is also proud to offer the CaviSense system to our office. With this small tool, we take a sample of the biofilm coating the teeth, and this changes the color of the appliance if there is a risk of cavities forming, so we know where to take action to prevent cavities. This diagnostic process only takes about ten seconds to complete!
Dental Fillings
What if we find a cavity has formed? If this happens, we can offer treatment in only one visit with a dental filling. The process involves numbing the tooth, gently removing decay, and adding a special composite resin that is metal-free and shaded to blend with the tooth, all in one sitting!
If you have any questions about how we protect smiles from cavities with early detection and treatments like Curodont and Silver Diamine Fluoride, or about treatment with our lifelike dental fillings, then contact our team today to learn more and get started.
