Dental Sedation For Our Young Patients
We offer an array of treatments for kids, from fillings for cavities to oral surgery to remove infected teeth. We know for children for dental anxiety, special needs, undergoing treatment could be difficult. However, to help them remain calm and relaxed, your Dallas, TX, pediatric dentist may offer dental sedation!
Choosing the Right Option for Your Child
When the time comes to sedate your children, our team will work alongside trained medical doctors, and our anesthesiologists will also all be members of the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA). Our board-certified anesthesiologist will monitor your child through the process, and the sedation option we choose will be based on your child’s medical history, level of anxiety, special needs, and other factors. The safety and comfort of our patients is paramount!
Our Sedation Options
We have three different options to help children of all ages enter a calm and relaxed state, with little to no memory of the procedure and no anxiety during treatment. For most cases, we could suggest nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas to many people. Our team will administer a special gas through a mask over the nose. The effects begin quickly, but also wear off just as quickly once treatment ends. Kids could return to school in most cases!
Sometimes, special needs or anxiety dictate the need for a deeper form of calming. With oral sedation, children will take a pill before the procedure. The effects send your little one into a deeper state of calm. The effects take time to wear off, so your child likely won’t return to school following treatment.
For the deepest form of relaxation, we may suggest IV. We administer the calming solution through an IV, and your child will be monitored by a trained anesthesiologist throughout the entire process. We often suggest this option for children with special needs that make undergoing treatment difficult, or for kids undergoing a minor oral surgery procedure, such as tooth extraction. We also employ this option for severe cases of dental anxiety.
The option we choose will depend on various factors, and we always take your child’s health and comfort into account. If you have any questions about our calming solutions, or about scheduling a visit or consultation for your kids, then please contact our team to learn more.
