At The Movies: Navigating Snacks
Yes, it can become easier and easier to guide your children toward snacks that are better for their oral health over time when you’re in the comfort of your own home. Heading out to the movie theater, however, can bring with it a very different set of expectations from the kiddos. If you’re on board when it comes to snacking while you watch but you’d like to maintain some level of protection for smiles, think through some easy advice.
Buying At The Theater
You know the second you walk up to the concessions stand that there’s not a single healthy option to be found. However, if you’ve decided that movie day is time to relax, have fun, and indulge a little, consider some suggestions that are safer for your kids’ oral health:
- Buy water instead of soda.
- If candy is on the list, choose candy that dissolves quickly like peppermint patties or milk chocolate (rather than chewy, sticky candies that coat teeth).
- Go for the popcorn (but skip the extra butter). Remember that popcorn is a whole grain and is safer for teeth than other options like filling up on sugar!
Do You Bring Your Own?
Are you someone who brings your own snacks to the movies? While we certainly aren’t suggesting you should sneak them into the theater in your purse, remember that this means you can bring anything you wish if you happen to choose this route. Rather than focusing on sugary drinks and candy, consider toting along something that your children will enjoy but that is a healthier option for smiles, such as string cheese, chopped veggie pieces, almonds, apple slices, etc. Tiny bottles of water will make a wonderful companion!
