Too Cool For The Pool: Safeguard Those Smiles!
Are your kids greatly anticipating the end of school and all that time they will get to spend splish-splashing in the pool this summer? Are you equally excited and a bit nervous as usual because as much fun as it is … the pool also presents a myriad of potential hazards that can lead to injuries? We understand. To help you relax, soak up the summertime fun, and keep your kids’ smiles safe, we offer some helpful tips that will safeguard your children’s oral health.
Watch Out For Ledge Danger
Remember that the ledge of the swimming pool is a dangerous spot. It’s very easy for a child to accidentally bump his or her mouth on this structure, which can lead to a split lip, cracked or dislodged teeth, and more. Come up with rules about where kids can hang out (and remember to instruct them to get out of the pool with the stairs, not by dragging themselves out along the edge).
Keep An Eye Out
Remember that kids need constant supervision, while they’re swimming. Their amazing ideas for makeshift surfboards and jumping platforms can lead to slipping, falling, and oral health injuries.
Be Strict With Jumping And Diving
About all of that jumping and diving. Telling your kids exactly where they may and may not jump and dive will help you prevent accidental oral health damage and more severe injuries. Diving in designated areas and jumping out, away from the edge is always the way to go.
Pool Toys Only!
If you let your kids hop into the pool with a baseball to play catch, chances are good that someone’s going to get socked in the mouth. Avoid preventable oral health injuries by allowing pool-only toys into the pool. Inflatables aren’t going to knock out a tooth!
