How To Help Kids Enjoy Good Oral Health

You can take actions at home and in our office to help your kids enjoy good oral health. These actions help fight the onset of cavities and gingivitis, helping little smiles stay strong. In today’s blog, your team at Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about helping children enjoy good oral health in Dallas, TX.

The Impacts of Poor Oral Health

When we don’t take time to care for smiles each day, this can lead to poor oral health. With children, daily action is needed to help safeguard their smiles. Otherwise, they could develop painful cavities. Over time, tooth decay becomes an infection that could threaten the stability of the teeth. If children lose baby teeth early, this impacts how permanent one arrives and could lead to misalignment. Lack of good oral hygiene habits also means that as they approach adulthood, the risk of severe concerns like gum disease is also higher! But we have a few tips to ensure your kids enjoy good oral health and beautiful smiles.

Better Oral Hygiene Habits

From babies and toddlers to older kids and teens, everyone benefits from daily care. We all need to brush our teeth first thing in the morning and then again before going to bed. For babies, you can clean their teeth with cloth or a small toothbrush that fits over your finger. For toddlers, you can graduate to an age-appropriate toothbrush. For older ones, you can supervise them to make sure they brush for at least two minutes. Little ones three and younger should use a rice-sized bit of fluoride toothpaste, and those over the age of three need a pea-sized amount, as fluoride helps strengthen enamel and fight cavity risk.

Your little ones can also enjoy improved oral hygiene by flossing each day. Before they brush the second time in the evening, they need to floss up and down each side of every tooth, dipping under the gums when they do, in order to extract food particles a toothbrush would miss. This is crucial for preventing decay from forming between teeth, and fighting the risk of gingivitis and gum disease as they grow older.

Checkups and Cleanings

Another crucial way to help children enjoy good oral health is with a checkup and cleaning. The first visit should happen when a child is about one, after the first baby tooth erupts. At around age two, children should start having a routine checkup and cleaning every six months. With a checkup, we will use digital imaging to concoct a detailed diagnosis, identifying concerns that need attention in their earliest stages. Our team will then create a treatment plan to address them. After the checkup portion, we will clean the teeth to remove all plaque and tartar, using an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual pick to do so. We then polish the teeth to make it more difficult for plaque and tartar to accumulate, and to brighten the smile too. These visits help kids avoid dental anxiety as they become accustomed to the office, and also helps us instill good oral health habits, so they can better protect their smiles on their own as adults!

Preventing and Treating Cavities

A part of helping kids enjoy good oral health involves preventing or treating tooth decay. Cavities are a common issue, but one we can address. If we catch the issue early during your child’s checkup, we could apply special materials like Curdont or Silver Diamine Fluoride to halt the decay and prevent the need for a filling. Applying these only takes a few seconds. To help prevent them altogether, we can offer fluoride during your child’s checkup visits, and also sealants to stay in place for years at a time.

If a cavity needs treatment, then we could offer a dental filling that looks natural and blends with your smile. If you have any questions about how to help your children enjoy better oral health, or how to make improvements to their oral hygiene routine, then contact our team today to learn more. We also look forward to seeing your child for a routine checkup and cleaning visits, so schedule one now if they have not seen the dentist in the past six months.
