How We Stop Decay With Silver Diamine Fluoride

When a cavity has formed in a little smile, then a filling could be needed to treat it and prevent infection. But what if we catch the issues early, in the earliest stages of demineralization? In today’s blog, Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about protecting smiles in Dallas, TX, with Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF).

The Onset of a Cavity

How does a cavity happen? The trouble starts when the outer enamel is compromised, allowing bacteria to reach the inner tissues to cause decay. This could happen when factors like plaque and tartar buildup, brought on by poor brushing/flossing and a diet high in sugar, weakens the enamel. Injury or teeth grinding could also compromise this protective layer. As the decay forms, it will grow and spread. At some point, a filling is needed. If it grows more severe, then we could offer a pulpotomy and crown. But if we are able to catch the trouble early, which often happens if kids attend routine checkups every six months, then we may halt it before a filling is needed!

Silver Diamine Fluoride

If we find the cavity is in the very early stages, then we could halt its progress by applying Silver Diamine Fluoride to the area. This agent coats the weakened portions of enamel to stop decay from progressing, and to prevent tooth sensitivity and toothaches. Kids then avoid the need for a filling. This could cause slight discoloration of the area, so we may recommend this for the side and rear teeth. But we also have another option for preventing the need for restoration!

Curodont

Again, if we see portions of the enamel have begun to weaken and the risk of cavities has increased, we could take immediate action to help prevent the need for a filling. Even before Silver Diamine Fluoride, we could offer another way to strengthen the area. We could apply a special gel known as Curodont, which strengthens the area to keep the enamel intact and to prevent it from weakening further, so your kids avoid cavities. We can also discuss fluoride treatment and dental sealants to help prevent the enamel from weakening at all, offering better protection against tooth decay.
