Dental Sealants Help Prevent Cavities

We offer treatment to help strengthen teeth and lower the risk of cavities, which is why we offer kids dental sealants. With this option, we could provide months or even years of cavity prevention! In today’s blog, Pediatric Dental Care at Casa Linda talks about the importance of dental sealants and how we apply them to little smiles.
Cavities and Childhood Smiles
Cavities are a common issue for kids of all ages, and can lead to painful symptoms and even the risk of infection and premature tooth loss. They form when harmful bacteria have the chance to consume particles of sugar and starch, a process that coats the teeth in plaque and tartar, eventually weakening enamel to make cavities possible. This is particularly true for the rear teeth, as bits of sugar and starch caught between these molars are often difficult for kids to reach when they brush and floss, making cavities more likely to form in the back of the mouth. But with dental sealants, we have a way to protect them!
Dental Sealants
The dental sealant itself is a thin layer of acrylic that we apply to the back teeth, one that is safe for kids of all ages. The application only takes a few seconds, as we dry the teeth and then apply these layers to the teeth. The cure quickly, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour to ensure it does so properly. Once in place, these coat the rear teeth so particles of sugar and starch can no longer be caught between the teeth, lowering the risk of tooth decay for months or even years to come. In fact, for some these layers could stay in place for up to ten years! A great way to take a preventive approach and help your children avoid the need for fillings or pulpotomies in the future.
What About Fluoride?
We also have another option for lowering the risk of tooth decay! With fluoride, we apply a special and naturally-occurring mineral to the surfaces of the teeth in a varnish form. We usually do this every six months following the cleaning. The fluoride then strengthens the outer enamel to make the onset of cavities less likely. Again, application only takes seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour to ensure it cures fully.
